Incontinence- age isn’t the culprit!

Incontinence. Another forbidden topic of conversation that we need to discuss more with loved ones (no matter what their age). And the crazy thing is that age does not even cause incontinence.

When we are parents of babies and toddlers the discussion of what kind of diapers to use are the topic de rigueur, however, when our bodies no longer function at a stellar optimum due to a myriad of health reasons, the mere word incontinence is frowned upon.

Let’s change that attitude!

So, what exactly is incontinence?

First, it is important to know that there are two types of incontinence, Urinary and Bowel.

  • Urinary– when the muscles or nerves of the bladder cannot properly hold or release urine
  • Bowel– (also known as fecal incontinence) is when you are unable to control bowel movements

It is possible to have one type and not the other, and some people can develop both.

So, how does one become incontinent?

There are many reason someone can become incontinent, and guess what?!

Age is not a reason!

Yes, you read that right. It is your health that impacts your bladder and bowel’s ability to function properly, not your age.

Here is a list of conditions that can affect your bladder and bowel:

  • Urinary Tract Infection
  • Pregnancy and Childbirth
  • Menopause
  • Prostate problems
  • Smoking
  • Overweight
  • Medical Conditions (i.e. Parkinson’s, Diabetes, MS, Dementia, etc.)
  • Medications
  • Hysterectomy
  • Bowel and Bladder muscle damage or weakness
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Nerve damage
  • Being physically inactive

I’m not saying that we should talk incontinence at the dinner table, but a one on one conversation between two adults should be more common and accepted. I believe it could help alleviate worry, fear, and doubts someone with incontinence may be having.

Plus, it is possible to treat incontinence!

Yes, it is true, there are many types of treatments for both urinary and bowel incontinence. Such as:

  • Medication
  • Surgery
  • Kegel Exercises
  • Devices
  • Nerve stimulation
  • Pelvic Floor Therapy

A change in your lifestyle can prevent incontinence as well. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Choice of foods and beverages (cut back on caffeine, alcohol, and sugar)
  • Quit smoking
  • Maintaining a healthy BMI (calculate your BMI)
  • Create a bathroom break schedule (helpful for those with memory issues)

Caring for incontinence

If you or the person you are caring for is in need of under garments, there are many options out there right now; many more than 40 years ago when June Allyson was promoting a certain brand.

There are even garments nowadays that are made of cloth and are washable.

However, I must remind you all how important changing garments several times a day, as well as keeping the skin area clean, to avoid skin issues.

Again, incontinence is not a result of age

If you are experiencing either urinary or bowel incontinence, please see a doctor to figure out what is causing this problem.

Don’t be afraid to talk about it, you might be able to cure it!
